When the camera is on screen

1 min read

The camera does not have to be on screen for the whole video. A stretch on the Camera track is a stretch where it does something else.

Making one

Put the playhead where you want it and use the buttons at the foot of the Camera tab, under WHERE THE CAMERA APPEARS.

Full frame adds three seconds where the camera goes away entirely and the recording has the whole canvas.

Swap blocks from here adds a stretch where the camera and the screen change places, switching over in a single frame.

Editing one

The clip is on the Camera track like any other clip. Drag it to move it, drag its ends for how long it lasts, and select it to see its length under SELECTED STRETCH. Remove this stretch deletes it and the camera goes back to normal there.

What it is for

Hiding the camera while something important is on screen. A form being filled in, a terminal, a piece of code. Your face is not adding anything there and it is covering a corner.

Swapping for an explanation. You stop demonstrating and start talking. The camera takes the larger block, the screen shrinks, and the viewer's attention follows without you saying "look at me now".

Coming back at the end. The last ten seconds of a video is usually a person saying what to do next, and that reads better as a face than as a still screenshot.

Audio sync

If the camera runs slightly ahead of or behind the screen, Offset on the same tab nudges it. This belongs to the individual recording, because it is a property of that capture device rather than of your project.
