Quality, format and where files go

All of this is on the settings menu, the button beside the record button.

Video Quality

Balanced and High Quality. Balanced is the right answer for almost everything: it is what the default is, and the difference on a screen recording of text and flat interface colours is small, while the difference in file size is not.

Choose High Quality when the recording contains photographs, video playing inside the window you are capturing, or a lot of fast motion. Those are the cases where compression shows.

Either way this is the quality of the recording, not of the export. You choose the export quality separately and later, when you know where the video is going.

Output Format

MP4 (H.264) is the default and should stay that way. It plays everywhere, every editor reads it, and every site accepts it.

WMV (Legacy) is there for an old Windows workflow that needs it. If you do not already know that you need WMV, you do not need it.

Where recordings go

The settings menu shows the current folder and Change Output Folder moves it. Each recording is named with its date and time.

Alongside each recording, Cilevi writes a small companion file with the same name. That file holds the pointer's path, every click and, if you enabled it, every key press. It is what the editor reads to build the zooms and draw the pointer. Keep it with the video: moving the video alone leaves you with a recording the editor can no longer do anything clever with.
