The timeline

1 min read

The timeline is a stack of tracks, each holding clips, with a playhead running through them.

The tracks

Video and Cursor (V1). Your recordings, and any video you imported. This is the track that decides how long the project is.

Zoom (Z1). One clip per zoom. Written for you from your clicks, and editable.

Text and Overlays (V2). Titles, arrows, shapes, pictures, and the blur and mosaic boxes.

Camera (C1). Empty most of the time. A clip on this track is a stretch where the camera does something different: hides, gets bigger, or swaps places with the screen.

System Audio (A1), Microphone (A2) and Background Music (A3). Three audio tracks, kept apart so that changing one does not touch the others.

Getting around

Click anywhere on the ruler to move the playhead there. Space plays and pauses from wherever it is. Home goes back to the start.

The mouse wheel scrolls the timeline sideways. A project longer than the window scrolls rather than shrinking, so the clips stay a usable size.

Selecting

Click a clip to select it. The panel on the right switches to that clip's settings, and the clip tabs appear.

Click on an empty part of the timeline to deselect, which brings back the project tabs. This is worth learning early, because half of the settings only appear when nothing is selected.

Locked tracks

A track can be locked, which stops it being edited by accident. A locked track is also skipped by the operations that work across every track, like cutting out the silences. If an edit seems to do nothing to one particular track, that is the first thing to check.
